Sailor caused fatal gas leak on nuclear sub
Investigators say a crew member was responsible for the accident on the Russian nuclear submarine that killed 20 people last week. The sailor has confessed to switching on the fire extinguishing system on the Nerpa for no apparent reason. He was not authorised to do so.

chairde (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)I know that it was either a design flaw or some mechanical/electronic problems in the submarine. Common sense tell us that no sailor with a sane mind is going to set off a fire fighting system on his own for no good reason. Why did he live if the system was set off in his section?

do you have any fucking idea how a submarine works? you fucking faggot... the fire systems are broken up by section... whatever section the fire is in is what section the fire system is activated in dumbfuck the submarine did not fail you fucking mother fuck the sailor did... human error FUCK YOU

No you are wrong on all counts. You only use insults because you lack a clear and concise argument. Clearly you Russians are embarrassed with the failure of this submarine and now some poor sailor is the scapegoat. Do you really believe that some sailor in another part of the submarine can kill 20 people by just pulling a fire alarm?

That Sailor shall be guilty for causing so many deaths.

What they didn't say was that the crew complement was twice normal. Whether this was a training cruise or a demonstration to the Indian Navy they plan to sell this beast to, it didn't go as planned.

"Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying "End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH," the paint wouldn't even have time to dry." - Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time

The gas that was used displaces all the oxygen, leading to suffocation. This is how all modern extinguishing systems work around electrical equipment; by removing one leg of the triad. Just simple physics and biology.

Typical of the Russians to blame faulty equipment on some lowly sailor. The Kurst and now this submarine indicate that there are serious equipment problems with Russian military hardware.
