amcnea (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)America has hundreds of Nuclear Power Plants. Actually nuclear power is the safest energy we know about. The Russian reactor was a HORRIBLE design. American reactors have 0% chance of duplicating what happened their. It would be like poring gasoline into a bucket and then striking a match. Then saying "Gasoline is dangerous, we should never use cars or engines."

There will be radiation everywhere until the end of time. Everywhere has a background which is about 2.4 millisievert per year. The ground you walk on everyday emits radiation, and so does the smoke detector in your house. But it will probably be safe to live there after a few hundred years. However, it could be as much as 1,000 years before it is safe again. But I would bet in 300 years people will be living there with no adverse health effects.

"The levels of water in the reactor core dropped dangerously low." Duh that was the safety test. They tried to run the reactor at low power levels causing power output to crash. To fix this they removed all the control rods from the reactor (breaking regulations). Then they ran the test and cut power to the water pumps. They noticed a problem and put the control rods back in. Causing the reactor to blow up because of a classified problem with the control rods they didn't know about.

The accident is just western propaganda! The glorious power plant crew just found a way to complete the energy production goal of the entire five year plan in a few milliseconds.
